A Cozy and Functional Redesign for a Waterfront Home

At Coralee Monaghan Interiors, we pride ourselves on transforming spaces into beautiful, functional, and comfortable havens. We recently had the pleasure of redesigning a living room and adjoining kitchen for a lovely home, and we are thrilled to share the results with you.
A New Hearth and Heart
The centerpiece of our living room renovation was the fireplace. We began by replacing the elaborate and outdated fireplace surround with a modern, stone design that instantly became a focal point of the room. To enhance the cozy ambiance, we added shiplap paneling to the alcoves either side of the fireplace and installed custom-built shelving and lower cupboards, providing a touch of rustic charm that complements the contemporary aesthetic. The bespoke built-ins not only offer ample storage but also create a balanced and symmetrical design, perfect for displaying cherished items and keeping the living area clutter-free.
Seating: Comfort Meets Craftsmanship
For seating, we selected Canadian-made, custom love seats and swivel gliders. These pieces were chosen for their superior craftsmanship and comfort, ensuring that our clients have the perfect spots to relax and unwind. The love seats, with their plush cushions and elegant design, add a touch of sophistication, while the swivel gliders provide a cozy and functional seating option for lake viewing or group conversations.
Timeless Elegance Underfoot
A room is never complete without the right rug, and for this project, we opted for one that is super soft and tufted. The addition of a rug pad underneath also added to the cushion-y softness. We also had to take into consideration that the family has a pet cat, choosing a rug that will not easily hook and fray due to clawing. The intricate design and warm colors of the rug add depth and warmth to the space, tying together the various elements of the room and providing a luxurious feel underfoot.
Thoughtful Accents: Coffee Table and Lighting
To complement the new seating, we selected a stylish coffee table that offers both beauty and functionality. Alongside, a new table lamp and standing lamp were chosen to provide the perfect lighting for any mood, whether it’s a quiet evening with a book or a lively gathering with friends and family. These lighting choices add layers to the room, enhancing the overall atmosphere and highlighting the design elements.
Kitchen Island: Functionality Meets Style
In the adjoining kitchen, we addressed one of the main concerns of our clients: the kitchen island. The old island was not optimally positioned and lacked functionality. We replaced it with a new, custom-designed island, sized and positioned for the existing space, meeting all distancing standards. It not only now fits perfectly within the kitchen, but also has up updated look with a black faucet and soap dispenser and matching kitchen hardware. The wood stain on the island is mimicked in the floating shelves in the living room, helping tie the cabinetry in both rooms together. The new island offers additional storage, a more practical layout for cooking and entertaining, and a better arrangement for bar seating due to the deeper overhang. No more bruised knees!
